Duty of Landlord to Provide Receipt for Payment of Rent

Under Section 235-e of New York's Real Property Law, a landlord is required to provide a written receipt to a residential tenant when rent is paid in the form of cash. The Receipt must contain the following information: (a) the date; (b) the amount paid; (c) identity of the rented premises and the period for which paid; and (d) signature and title of person receiving the payment.

If payment is via check, a written receipt is not required unless specifically requested by the tenant.
